Municipal Spending Top Issue Driving Calgarians’ Pick For Mayor

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Calgary, AB – With only six days left until Calgary’s municipal election, a new Ipsos Reid / Global News Calgary/QR77 telephone poll shows that Municipal Spending continues to be the top issue determining who residents will vote into the Mayor’s office.

When asked, unprompted, to provide the most important issue that will determine which mayoral candidate they will vote for on October 18th, “municipal spending” (23%) tops the list, while three-quarters of Calgarians say that another issue is driving their vote for Mayor.

  • The issue of “municipal spending” is even stronger among those Calgarians who say they are “absolutely certain” to vote (30%).

Other top issues include:

  • transportation/transit (15%)
  • infrastructure maintenance/improvement/development (12%)
  • municipal taxes (10%)
  • accountability/honesty/integrity (8%)
  • airport tunnel/closure of Barlow Trail (6%)
  • road conditions/snow removal (6%)
  • crime/safety/policing (5%)
  • education issues (5%)

“Municipal spending” is the top issue for both Higgins (24%) and McIver (31%) voters, while “transportation/transit” is the top issue for Nenshi voters (25%).

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid telephone poll conducted between October 5 and 6, 2010. The poll is based on a randomly selected sample of 500 Calgarians aged 18 or older. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within ± 4.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population of Calgary been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Calgary population aged 18 or older according to 2006 Census data.
