BC Election Daily Issue Polling - April 24

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Vancouver, BC - In partnership with Global BC, Ipsos Reid will be conducting quick turnaround polling on the issues of the day throughout the BC election campaign.

How Closely Following Campaign

As you may know, a provincial election campaign is underway and general election day is on May 14th. How closely have you been following the election campaign so far?

19% - Very closely
46% - Somewhat closely
24% - Not very closely
11% - Not at all closely

Notes: Two-thirds (65%) of British Columbians say they have been following the election campaign either ‘very closely’ (19%) or ‘somewhat closely’ (46%) so far. This is much higher among older voters (78% among 55+ years) than among younger voters (44% among 18-34 years), with voters in the 35 to 54 year segment in the middle (65%).

Ipsos Reid asked this same question in 1996, 2001 and 2005 (but not in 2009). In each case, the question was asked later in the campaign. In all three cases, 74% said they were following the campaign either ‘very closely’ or ‘somewhat closely’.

Vote Changing

Has there been anything in the campaign so far that has either changed your vote, or made you seriously reconsider your vote?

10% - Yes
90% - No

Notes: Only one-in-ten (10%) voters say there has been anything in the campaign that has either changed their vote, or made them seriously reconsider their vote. This suggests that minds are either largely made up, or the campaign has yet to produce a defining new issue.

Methodology

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll of 400 adult British Columbians conducted online using Ipsos Reid’s national online household panel between April 23 and 24, 2013. A survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and a 100% response rate would have an estimated margin of error of ±4.9%, 19 times out of 20. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual BC population according to 2011 Census data.
