64% Voted for the Same Person as their Partner in the 2012 Presidential Election

Washington, DC- With some caveats, many Trump voters are really not confident that their spouses are going to support Trump, Ipsos found in a survey for the Guardian.

  • Only 56% of Independents believe they will vote for the same person as their partner.
  • 17% of male Trump supporters believe their partner will vote for a different candidate.
    • 77% of female Trump supporters think their spouse will vote for the same candidate.
  • Clinton supporters are more confident in their partners voting for the same candidate with only 10% of male Clinton supporters believing their spouse would vote for someone else.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted August 16-19, 2016. For the survey, a sample of 1,249 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The poll has a credibility interval of ± 3.1 percentage points for all respondents and a credibility interval adjusted for design effect of the following (n=1,249, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=4.6).
